The Power of Pinterest to Grow Your Business

Pinterest is a powerful tool to grow your business.

Before you assume I’m not talking about your industry or a business of your size, hear me out!

What Pinterest Did For My Business

I was hesitant to start using Pinterest to drive traffic to my website. Already putting a lot of time and energy into Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, I didn’t want to add another thing to my to-do list.

After multiple people claimed that Pinterest greatly increased their website traffic, I decided to give it a brief try.

Within one week of focusing on Pinterest, my website traffic doubled!

Growth has steadily continued ever since then, and Pinterest has become the #1 referral source to my site!

Needless to say, I’m convinced of the power of Pinterest!

Pinterest Myths Debunked

Most people have the idea that Pinterest is a social media platform for women who are interested in fashion, recipes, or home decorating. While that segment of society does make up a portion of Pinterest users, it’s so much more than that!

Pinterest is Not Social Media

The biggest misconception about Pinterest is that it’s a social media platform. But it’s not! It’s a search engine!

Not only does this change the way you use Pinterest, in my experience, it’s less work than maintaining a social media platform.

Who Uses Pinterest & How

Pinterest releases statistics about their uses regularly. Their recent stats show that:

  • 40% of new Pinterest users are men
  • Millennials use Pinterest as much as Instagram.
  • The median age of users is 40; the active majority are younger.
  • 72% use Pinterest to make purchase decisions (even for offline purchases).
  • It’s successfully used by businesses in almost any industry.
  • It has a high engagement rate with 70% of users clicking, not just browsing.

How To Use Pinterest To Grow Your Business

Before getting started with Pinterest to grow your business, there are a few things you need to think about.

  1. Know Your Audience: Who is your ideal customer? Don’t just have a general idea. Actually take the time to think through specifics – age, life stage, location, occupation, income bracket, etc. And what are they looking for? What kind of information will interest them?
  2. Search Engine Optimization: Don’t let the terminology scare you. Optimizing your content to show up in front of the users who are most likely to be interested is a good thing! More on this below.
  3. Calls To Action: What do you want people to do when they arrive on your site? Knowing this helps you come up with more effective content and pints to generate the right kind of traffic.

Effective Pinterest Marketing

Having a Pinterest profile, boards, and a bunch of pins linking to your website won’t necessarily be enough to generate the kind of traffic you’re looking for. Using Pinterest effectively requires some strategy.

A major component of search engine optimization is keywords or keyword phrases. Basically, the terms users will type in a search bar to find your content.

It’s important to use keywords in your Pinterest strategy. Where should you use keywords?

  1. Pinterest Profile Name & Description
  2. Pinterest Board Titles & Descriptions
  3. Pin Descriptions

How to Get People to Click on Your Pins

Your pins need to be visually appealing. Surprisingly, your graphic does not have to be a professional photograph. Many successful Pinterest accounts use photo-free pins effectively. But they must be attractive.

Engaging headlines and descriptions are also important.

There is much information available online about creating effective pins. For the purposes of this post, I’ll leave it at that.

Let’s talk about incentives.

Providing Incentives to Increase Engagement

Everybody likes to get something for free. Providing a “freebie” is a powerful way to increase engagement not only on Pinterest, but across your entire online presence.

Examples of a “freebies” or incentives include:

  • e-book
  • printable
  • checklist
  • presentation/slide show
  • lock screen
  • e-course
  • coupon or discount code

Offering a freebie motivates users to engage with your content, but can also be a useful tool for training your team, educating your customers, or adding value to the products and services you provide as a business.

Content Is King

A Pinterest strategy is nothing without content. You need to have content for your pins to link to. Beyond that, more content:

  • provides greater opportunity to use keywords for SEO
  • on your website gives you more material for which to create pins
  • broadens your reach by engaging a larger audience
  • allows you to experiment and determine what works best

Create A Business Blog

The easiest (and my favorite!) way to create more content is blogging. Each blog post is a separate page that you can link to with your pins. Each post has a different focus and can maximize different keywords. You don’t need to hire a web designer for each blog post – the design of your blog should automatically match the design of your website.

Add Pages to Your Website

Having more than one page on your website allows you to create different pins for each page, highlighting different content. If you have a one-page site design, it may hinder your Pinterest efforts because every pin will be linking to the same page.

Consider creating individual landing pages for all of your promotions and freebies.
